Sophie has pointed out some BUCS movies:
http://www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/training/endnote/endnote.shtml
"In my explorations the other day I found some examples of BUCS Camtasia training. I thought you might like to take a peek. They've split their tutorials into small sections for the main functions of the software (Endnote) and have narrated it."

But I haven't actually been to Oakfield so I feel particularly clueless about designing this one. I think we should get Suzanne or Caroline involved at this stage, they're the ones that know the campus library best, what's on offer and what shoould be promoted.

"as we gain experience, anyone in the 'podcast team' should be in the position of making suggestions i.e. we might need to have an overview re: consistancy of approach/style. " I agree with keeping things consistant, we want it to sound professional and organised. Perhaps this is where the music would help to tie things together. Katy's suggestion of guidelines yesterday was a good one

Music
I like the idea of having a bit of music as an intro but found music throughout the broadcasts distracting. Talis' broadcasts sounded like a murder mystery!
Voices
Wow, what a difference between the effect of different people's voices! I agree we should test out each volunteer's voice for suitability. Colloquial and chatty is definately the way to go. It was also nice to hear a variety of people on different podcasts. Using snippets of interviews was quite effective too. This might work well with things to do with SLs?
Audio tours
The provision of a numbered map was a really good idea (see Curtin Uni) to ensure the tour is as clear as poss. I think we should avoid opening times though. Curtin started their library tour with this; what a way to put someone off! It won't be remembered either. I think its a prime example of information that is better placed in another format, i.e. visually.
I also thought Curtin's long list of podcasts is quite off-putting. Much better to integrate them in the relevant area on the webpages or the induction (are we putting them in both?) and to consider a 'list' as a sort of supplementary index.

I had a quick listen to some of these podcasts. What struck me about most of them was that they were over-long. I do not have the time to listen to a 10-minute podcast, let alone a 50-minute one - and I'm sure the students won't either. I would prefer a 2-3 minute soundbite which was very focused on answering my question. If we have longer bits of info to get over, surely there are better ways? Am I missing the point here? I thought the Glasgow Met podcast about Wikipedia was exactly right. Good use of background music, intereresting and natural voice speaking at a good pace, very focussed info about the pluses and minuses of Wikipedia. Focused, lively, and short. Curtin's podcast was over-slow and too long. Speaker's voice was clearly reading from a script, with odd voice modulation - sounded false. Talis - didn't even go there - 50 minutes? Forget it. I tried the 'Learning to Speak: Creating a Library Podcast With a Unique Voice' from the higheredblogcon site. Problem here was that the speaker had such a boring flat voice I couldn't stick with it. All these reasons may sound rather frivolous, but if we don't make podcasts attractive and easy to listen to, people won't bother with them.

Impressed with Curtin Uni Library's podcast - very clear if a bit bland perhaps. Glasgow's approach is more entertaining - electro-dance music plays in the background. This might distract as many people as it attaracts - although I know that a lot of people work with music /tele. If we opt for a soundtrack, maybe something less frantic (indiction week: think hangovers & general bewilderment). No Peruvian pipes or whale noises though please.

I agree, some intro and concluding music would really help bring a podcast together. I'm wondering if we can use something from the public domain, perhaps with a creative commons licence, acknowledging the creator as required. Look at http://creativecommons.org/find/ for ideas...

Music would make the podcasts sound more professional and could help break up long sections of speech, but where would we get this music from? Would it be produced in house? Buying it in might prove to be expensive as would we not technically be "broadcasting" it? Would this require extra permission/payment due to copyright?

When secure electronic delivery of ILLs kicks in I think it would be a good idea to have a screencast explaining how to make online requests and another showing how to download and print from the emails users will be sent. I think this is one for the future though.

Nice to be involved in a Wiki at last. It's very easy to edit - have just corrected your spelling :-) Alas, I do not have anything more to the point to add as yet. Signed, the manic proofreader.
